What Would A Killer Drive? The Cars of ‘Black Doves’

Black Doves

What’s cooler than a contract killer? How about a contract killer who drives a vintage BMW? I agree. If you haven’t seen Netflix’s latest spy thriller ‘Black Doves’ or the cars in it, here’s a preview:

‘Black Doves’ Isn’t Your Average Spy Thriller

Every ‘Black Doves’ Character (& Their Cars) Have Backstories

Ben Whishaw’s character, Sam, is one of the most intriguing contract killers or ‘triggermen’ we’ve seen on screen in a long time. He’s the son of a triggerman himself, a storyline that unfolds in a really disturbing way.

This E24 BMW 635 is featured so often in ‘Black Doves’ that it becomes a character itself. It even gets a reference when, after leaving it in traffic to chase some bad guys, another character asks, “You’re gonna leave that car? It’s a really nice car!” No kidding, buddy! We know.

Eventually, we discover that the car belonged to Sam’s father before him. If you’re wondering why they would base an entire series around a car, maybe you should look inside this spectacular 6-series:

Please don’t miss the amazing features of this car, like the gorgeous wheels, the legit bumper, and the perfect brown exterior. She’s a masterpiece.

He May Be A Killer, But Sam’s Also A (Car) Lover

Speaking of masterpieces, the BMW isn’t the only rad car in Sam’s collection. We see him roll up to retrieve Kiera Knightley’s character in a Ford Escort GT during a flashback. Sound like a familiar ride? That’s because that exact vehicle was featured in the recent Netflix series ‘Monsters: The Menendez Brothers‘; see my automotive review of the series here.

The ‘Black Doves’ English Cars Are On Point

This series also features Sarah Lancashire (of the HBO Max ‘Julia’ show fame) as the Queen Bitch In Charge of the Black Doves. Because she’s a British baddy, she gets chauffeured in a Jag sedan. Duh.

Pregnant With Twins On The Job? No Problem.

And because Kiera Knightley’s character is a posh Londoner, we see her drive an Audi SUV at one point. (Spoiler alert: at one point, we see a biometrically locked gun safe in the boot of the Audi.) But earlier in her career, when she was a lowly newbie and pregnant with twins, we see her in this BMW 3 series doing what killers do.

Mama’s ‘Black Doves’ S2: Automotive Wish List

This show has been so well received that Season Two has reportedly already been greenlit. Here are the automotive matchups I’d like to see on screen for that next season.

First is the beautiful and tragic love story between Sam and Michael, played by Omari Douglas. I’m sure Michael and his daughter will be back for Season Two and when they do, I think there should be less hiding and more driving.

Driving in what? We can assume that Michael will own something safe and family-friendly (as a father) but with a little bit of an edge. I vote for a vintage Volvo or in my dreams, a Saab. What’s that? Are you worried it’ll break down? Hey, this is Sam’s boyfriend; he’s not afraid of little danger. 900 Turbo, here we come!

Season Two: Hector Newman Needs Wheels

In this next season, I’d like to see the villains get behind some sweet rides. Why should our protagonists have all of the fun? How about Hectar?

You know Hector, he’s the kid that was spared in the back of the Range Rover incident? Now he’s all grown up and heading his crime empire. To do so, I think he should drive something sick like the Aston Martin Valhalla, which may not be practical for the streets of London but would certainly make an entrance. If that’s not in the budget, a tricked-out vintage Mini would make for some spectacular chase scenes.

Let’s Give It Up For Lenny!

Finally, let’s not forget Kathryn Hunter’s scratchy, fearless, boss lady character, Lenny. She’s the greatest. Her audacious attitude is enough to make a woman want to take up smoking, give up Botox, and grab a gun.

A broad like this doesn’t drive a Prius. If she needs to be chauffeured, I’d like it to be in a big, fat Rolls Royce. On the other hand, she likes to be in charge, so maybe she’s more of an Ineos Grenadier driver. I’d love to see her rocking their take on the Land Rover Defender in matte black.
